Express Entry pool is more competitive than ever, even as growth slows

The Express Entry pool is becoming harder to crack at the top end, even as overall growth slows sharply. Between April 12 and April 26, 2026, the pool added just 897 new profiles, a drop of 60% from the 2,193 added in the previous two-week period. Yet competition at the 500+ CRS range kept intensifying. If you are watching cut-offs, this data matters.

What the pool data shows

Canada’s Express Entry system ranks candidates using a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. Every two weeks, IRCC releases pool composition data showing how many candidates sit in each CRS score band.

The April 12-26 report revealed something important. New profiles entering the pool were concentrated in the lower CRS ranges. The net gain of 897 profiles came almost entirely from candidates scoring below 500. At the same time, the 501-600 band and the 601+ band continued to grow.

Three draws took place during the same late-April period. All carried CRS cut-offs above 500. The candidates being invited are pulling from the most competitive tier of the pool, while lower-scoring candidates continue to stack up behind them.

The result: fewer new candidates are entering the top of the pool, but the top is still filling. Competition intensifies even while total pool growth stalls.

Why Express Entry pool growth slowed by 60%

The 60% drop in pool growth is significant, but it does not necessarily signal a policy shift at IRCC. A few factors are likely at play.

Seasonal application patterns affect the pace. Fewer people complete language testing or job offer arrangements during early spring, which reduces new profile entries.

The slowdown may also reflect a more mature Express Entry market. Most people who are eligible and aware of the program have already entered the pool. New entrants now skew toward recent graduates or people who only recently met minimum eligibility thresholds, which tends to produce lower CRS scores.

Worth noting: three draws in two weeks is a fast pace. If IRCC maintains that draw frequency through Q2 2026, even a slower-growing pool will cycle through quickly. The pace of draws matters as much as the size of the pool.

What this means for your CRS score

If you are currently scoring in the 400-490 range, the pool data is not encouraging. New profiles entering at your CRS level are increasing the number of candidates ahead of you in the queue.

If you are in the 500+ range, the picture is mixed. Your position is more stable, but the 501-600 band grew again in April, which means cut-offs in that range are unlikely to fall significantly in the near term.

The most effective levers for improving your CRS score are:

  • Completing a higher level of education in Canada
  • Obtaining a qualifying job offer (50 to 200 additional CRS points)
  • Building French language proficiency (up to 50 additional points)
  • Receiving a Provincial Nomination (600-point boost that effectively guarantees an ITA)

The broader picture: what IRCC is targeting in 2026

Canada’s 2026 immigration levels plan targets 109,000 new permanent residents through Express Entry. To reach that number, IRCC needs consistent draw frequency across multiple categories including general, Canadian Experience Class, French language, STEM, healthcare, and trades.

The April pool data suggests that general-category and CEC draws may sustain higher cut-offs through the rest of Q2 2026. French-language and category-based draws are the more likely source of invitations for lower-CRS candidates in the months ahead.

If you qualify for a French-language draw or a category-based selection, this is worth exploring now. If the Express Entry pool has been a frustrating wait, our provincial nominee program guide covers the pathways that may work better for your situation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the current Express Entry CRS cut-off in 2026?

The most recent draws in late April 2026 carried cut-offs above 500 for general and CEC categories. French-language draws have been running lower, between 393 and 419 in 2026.

Why did the Express Entry pool grow more slowly in late April 2026?

The pool added just 897 profiles between April 12 and 26, a 60% drop from the prior period. Seasonal application patterns and a maturing applicant base are the most likely contributors.

Does slower Express Entry pool growth improve my chances of getting an ITA?

Not necessarily. Slower growth at the lower CRS tiers does not benefit candidates below 500. Top-end bands continued growing, keeping competition intense at the cut-off level.

How can I improve my CRS score quickly?

The fastest gains typically come from improved French language scores, or a provincial nomination. A regulated consultant can identify the best path for your specific profile.
