WHAT IS THE ALBERTA FARM STREAM?
The Farm Stream is one of four entrepreneur pathways under Alberta’s Provincial Nominee Program, the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP). It allows Alberta to nominate experienced farmers and agricultural investors for permanent residence, provided they invest a minimum of CAD $500,000 of equity in a primary production farming business in Alberta.
The Farm Stream operates differently from the other three AAIP entrepreneur streams. There is no Expression of Interest (EOI) pool, no points grid, and no online portal. Applications are submitted on paper and mailed directly to AAIP. Your business plan is reviewed not only by AAIP but also by Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation, who assess whether your proposed farming operation is feasible, viable, and aligned with Alberta’s agricultural industry needs.
The AAIP Farm Stream is an Alberta Provincial Nominee Program pathway for experienced farmers and agricultural investors. Eligible applicants must demonstrate farm management skills, a minimum net worth of CAD $500,000, and the ability to invest at least CAD $500,000 of equity in a primary production farming business in Alberta. Unlike other AAIP streams, the Farm Stream uses a direct paper application, there is no points system or Expression of Interest. Applications are reviewed by AAIP and Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation before a nomination is issued.
Quick Navigation
DO YOU QUALIFY?
Who qualifies for the Alberta Farm Stream?
To be eligible for the Farm Stream, you must meet all of the following requirements at the time your application is mailed to AAIP and at the time of assessment.
Farm management skills You must prove that you have farm management skills. AAIP does not prescribe a single way to demonstrate this. Acceptable proof may include, but is not limited to:
- Financial documentation of an existing farm business you own or operate
- Documentation of your education, training, and work experience in agriculture
- A proposed business plan for the farming enterprise you intend to establish in Alberta
- Proof that a Canadian financial institution is willing to finance your proposed farming business
The strength and credibility of your proof matters. Applications representing the best opportunity for growth relevant to Alberta’s agri-food targets are given priority.
Sufficient financial resources You must be able to invest a minimum of CAD $500,000 of equity in a primary production farming business in Alberta. You must also provide documents showing a minimum net worth of CAD $500,000, or confirmation of your ability to access a similar amount from other sources. AAIP may require you to demonstrate the ability to invest more than the minimum amount.
Primary production investment Your investment must be in a primary production farming business. Your business plan must document your investment plans and must be submitted with your application. Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation reviews this plan to confirm the farming operation aligns with Alberta’s agricultural industry requirements.
Who is NOT eligible:
- Anyone with an active nomination under another AAIP stream that has not expired
- Anyone issued a letter barring re-application for a specified period
- Anyone with a removal order from IRCC or the Canada Border Services Agency
- Foreign nationals in Canada without valid temporary resident status
- Live-in caregivers currently living in Canada
- Temporary foreign workers residing in a province other than Alberta
- International students in Canada, including those on co-op or internship placements
Note: The Farm Stream ineligibility list includes two categories not found in the other AAIP entrepreneur streams: temporary foreign workers outside Alberta, and international students. If you are currently studying or working outside Alberta under a temporary status, you are not eligible to apply.
HOW THE FARM STREAM DIFFERS FROM OTHER AAIP STREAMS
How is the Farm Stream different from the other AAIP entrepreneur pathways?
Understanding how this stream works before you apply will save significant time and resources.
No points grid. The Rural, Graduate, and Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur Streams all use a scored Expression of Interest system where candidates compete based on a points ranking. The Farm Stream has no points grid. Your application is assessed on its individual merits, the quality of your business plan, the strength of your farm management experience, and your financial capacity.
No online portal. The other entrepreneur streams use the AAIP online portal. The Farm Stream requires a paper application, mailed by registered mail or courier to AAIP’s Edmonton office. Applications submitted by email or fax are not accepted.
Agricultural expertise review. Your business plan is forwarded to Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation for a separate feasibility and viability review. This is unique to the Farm Stream. The quality of your business plan, and its alignment with Alberta’s agri-food industry priorities, is a central factor in your application’s success.
Direct application, no waitlist. Because there is no EOI pool, you do not wait to be invited. You apply when ready. However, AAIP may still decline to process applications at its discretion, and meeting eligibility requirements does not guarantee a nomination.
HOW TO APPLY — YOUR 5-STEP PATH
How does the Alberta Farm Stream application process work?
Step 1 — Read the AAIP terms and conditions Before applying, read the AAIP Terms and Conditions. AAIP can close streams, change criteria, or decline to assess applications at any time without notice. Eligibility does not guarantee assessment or nomination.
Step 2 — Review the eligibility criteria and business plan guidelines Confirm you meet all eligibility requirements. Download and review the AAIP Business Plan Guidelines before preparing your plan. Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation will assess your plan for feasibility and alignment with Alberta’s agricultural industry, a weak or generic plan is one of the most common reasons for decline.

AFTER YOU APPLY — ASSESSMENT AND DECISION
What happens after you mail your Farm Stream application?
Application acknowledgement You will receive an email from AAIP confirming your file has been received, along with your AAIP file number. All AAIP emails come from an @gov.ab.ca address, if you receive correspondence from a Gmail, Hotmail, or Yahoo address claiming to be AAIP, do not respond and report it.
Application assessment Only complete applications are assessed. If your application is incomplete, it will be declined and you must submit a new one and pay the fee again.
A program officer will evaluate your application against the Farm Stream eligibility criteria. Your business plan is forwarded to Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation, who assess whether it is feasible, viable, and consistent with the needs of Alberta’s agriculture industry. Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation then provides feedback to AAIP.
Interview The AAIP may request an interview to seek further clarification. Interviews are conducted by web-based video conferencing. You must be able to respond to questions and demonstrate how your proposed business plan meets the Farm Stream requirements.
If your application is approved You will become a Provincial Nominee and receive a nomination package by email. The package will tell you and your dependants how to apply for permanent residence to IRCC.
If your application is declined You will be notified by email with the reasons for decline. If you can demonstrate that an error was made in applying program criteria, you may submit a Request for Reconsideration within 30 calendar days. The reconsideration fee is $250 (for requests paid on or after April 1, 2024). This fee is refunded only if the original decision is overturned.
AFTER YOU ARE NOMINATED
What happens after you receive your AAIP Farm Stream nomination?
Apply for permanent residence within 6 months
Your AAIP nomination certificate is valid for 6 months. You must apply to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for permanent residence before it expires. IRCC reviews your application for health, security, and criminal admissibility. Only IRCC can issue a permanent resident visa, AAIP is not involved in that decision.
Medical, criminal, and security checks
You and your family must pass medical, criminal, and security checks. Do not arrange a medical examination until IRCC specifically requests one.
Keep AAIP and IRCC updated
Notify both AAIP and IRCC if your address, email, phone number, family status, immigration status, or representative changes during the process. To update AAIP, email your AAIP file number and details to the program officer who issued your nomination.
Nomination extension
If you cannot submit your permanent residence application to IRCC within 6 months, you may request a one-time nomination extension ($150 fee, non-refundable for requests paid on or after April 1, 2024). Extensions are not guaranteed. You cannot receive more than one extension.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Frequently Asked Questions About the Alberta Farm Stream
Is there a points system for the Alberta Farm Stream?
No. The Alberta Farm Stream does not use a points grid or Expression of Interest system. You submit a paper application directly to AAIP. Your application is assessed individually against the eligibility criteria, and your business plan is reviewed by Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation. There is no pool or ranking, your application competes on its own merits.
Is there a language requirement for the Alberta Farm Stream?
There is no explicit, mandatory language requirement for the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) Farm Stream at the provincial nomination stage. However, a minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 5 is recommended for success, and proficiency is required for federal stages.
What types of farming qualify as primary production?
The Farm Stream is intended for primary production farming businesses, operations that produce agricultural goods directly from land, such as crop farming, livestock operations, and similar enterprises. Applications that demonstrate strong alignment with Alberta’s agri-food targets are given priority in the assessment process.
Can I apply if I am currently a temporary foreign worker or international student in Canada?
Not if you are working outside Alberta or studying in Canada. Temporary foreign workers residing in a province other than Alberta and international students (including those on co-op or internship placements) are explicitly ineligible for the Farm Stream. This is a restriction that does not apply to the other AAIP entrepreneur streams.
Does Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation approve or reject my application?
Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation provides a feasibility and viability assessment of your business plan and sends feedback to AAIP. The final nomination decision rests with AAIP, not Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation. However, a negative assessment from Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation is likely to result in a declined application. A strong, credible, and Alberta-specific business plan is essential.
What happens if my application is declined?
You will receive a decision letter by email explaining the reasons. If you believe an error was made in applying the program criteria, you can submit a Request for Reconsideration within 30 calendar days. The fee is $250 (for requests paid on or after April 1, 2024) and is only refunded if the original decision is overturned. Reconsideration cannot be used to submit new evidence or seek exceptions to criteria.
Can I get a work permit to live in Alberta while my application is processed?
The Farm Stream does not include a 205(a) Letter of Support provision for work permit extensions, this option is available in the Graduate and Rural streams but is not available in the Farm Stream. If you hold a valid work permit in Alberta, you may be able to apply for a Bridging Open Work Permit once you have applied to IRCC and received an Acknowledgement of Receipt.

Ready to Explore the Alberta Farm Stream?
Agriculture is the foundation of Alberta’s economy. The Farm Stream exists because Alberta actively wants experienced farmers and agricultural investors to establish primary production businesses in the province.
But this is not a simple application. A $500,000 investment, a business plan reviewed by two government bodies, and no points system to guide your positioning, every element of your file must be right the first time.
