If your category has gone quiet, do not wait on it alone. A category based Express Entry strategy needs a backup route. Official data from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s (IRCC) shows 23 category rounds between January 5 and October 1, 2026. Some categories drew only once. Education, STEM and Researchers with Canadian work experience had no rounds at all.
We pulled every 2026 round from the official Express Entry rounds file on October 11, 2026. Below you will find how often each category drew, how long the gaps ran, and what to do while you wait. CRS means Comprehensive Ranking System, the points score IRCC uses to rank profiles. A cut-off is the lowest score invited in a round.
How often did each Express Entry category draw in 2026?
Category rounds were uneven in 2026. French-language proficiency led with 10 rounds and 50,500 invitations, while Healthcare and Social Services had 3 rounds and 11,500 invitations. Trades had 2 rounds, Senior Managers and Physicians had 3 small rounds each, and Transport had just one round of 300.
| Category | Rounds in 2026 | Invitations | CRS cut-off range | Last round |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| French-language proficiency | 10 | 50,500 | 382 to 420 | August 19, 2026 |
| Healthcare and Social Services | 3 | 11,500 | 467 to 475 | September 4, 2026 |
| Trades | 2 | 6,500 | 476 to 477 | October 1, 2026 |
| Senior Managers with Canadian work experience | 3 | 1,000 | 389 to 429 | September 16, 2026 |
| Physicians with Canadian work experience | 3 | 891 | 169 to 223 | September 3, 2026 |
| Transport | 1 | 300 | 470 | August 7, 2026 |
| Skilled Military Recruits | 1 | 4 | 368 | July 23, 2026 |
| Education, STEM, Researchers with Canadian work experience | 0 | 0 | None | No round in 2026 |
For comparison, Canadian Experience Class had 17 rounds and 55,250 invitations. The Provincial Nominee Program had 19 rounds and 9,270. Across all 59 rounds, IRCC issued 135,215 invitations, and category rounds made up 70,695 of them, about 52 percent.
Which Express Entry categories have gone quiet, and for how long?
As of October 11, 2026, French-language proficiency has gone 53 days without a round, its longest pause this year. Healthcare has gone 37 days and Physicians 38 days. Transport has not drawn since August 7, and Education has not drawn since September 17, 2025, according to IRCC’s rounds data.
Long gaps happen. Healthcare went 125 days between its February 20 and June 25 rounds. Trades went 182 days between April 2 and October 1, then came back with 3,500 invitations at a cut-off of 476.
So a quiet category is not always a closed one. Sitting still is still a poor bet, because your profile only stays in the pool for 12 months.
What should your category based Express Entry strategy include?
A sound category based Express Entry strategy has two tracks running at once. Track one keeps your category eligibility clean and your profile current. Track two builds a second way in, such as a provincial nomination, a higher CRS score, or French test results, so a long pause does not stop your plan.
For track one, these are the checks we run on every file:
- NOC Lead Statement Match: Ensure primary duties match your National Occupational Classification (NOC) code rather than relying on title alone, as visa officers evaluate actual job duties line by line.
-
Qualifying Window Verification: Confirm that qualifying work experience falls within IRCC’s mandatory moving window—at least 12 months of continuous or non-continuous full-time work (or part-time equivalent) within the preceding 3 years.
-
Profile Maintenance: Update changes immediately, including revised language scores, additional months of qualifying work, or accompanying spouse credentials.
-
Profile Expiry Tracking: Monitor the 12-month pool expiry date to prevent profile abandonment and the loss of your original tie-breaking submission timestamp.

When an invitation does come, you get 60 days to submit a complete application. Our Invitation to Apply guide walks through what happens next.
Should you add a provincial nomination to your plan?
Often, yes. A provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points, and IRCC held 19 Provincial Nominee Program rounds in 2026 with cut-offs from 697 to 805. Those cut-offs already include the 600 points, so the base scores invited were roughly 97 to 205.
The math is simple: 697 minus 600 is 97, and 805 minus 600 is 205. Almost any Express Entry candidate clears that base score once nominated.
The catch is time. A nomination adds months, and each province sets its own rules on job offers, settlement funds and where you must live. Start that work while you wait, not after your category goes silent.
Can Canadian Experience Class or French be your fallback?
Yes, if you qualify: Canadian Experience Class drew 17 times in 2026, roughly every two weeks. Cut-offs were between 507 and 523 (the January 7 round was at 511, per CIC News). French-language proficiency rounds went as low as 382 on August 19. Either route can beat waiting, but each needs a score or skill you may not have yet.
The pool is crowded in the middle. On September 27, 2026, IRCC counted 73,131 profiles scoring 451 to 500, and 21,070 scoring 501 to 600. A Trades or Healthcare cut-off near 475 sits right inside that crowd.
French draws have also slowed since the summer. Our look at how French draws have thinned in 2026 explains who still benefits.
If your score is close to a cut-off, small gains matter. Run your numbers in our CRS score calculator, then look at a language retest, your spouse’s results, or another year of Canadian work.
How do you test your category based Express Entry strategy against the data?
Put your score next to the last three cut-offs for your category, then count the days since the last round. If you sit below every recent cut-off, or the gap is already longer than any gap this year, your backup track should move to the front of your plan now.
Here is an example. A trades worker at 470 was below both 2026 Trades cut-offs, 477 and 476. That person should be working on a nomination or a language retest today.
A healthcare worker at 480 cleared all three 2026 Healthcare cut-offs of 467, 475 and 475. That person’s job is to keep the profile complete and current, so nothing slows the file when the next round comes.
FAQ: what else do people ask about category draws?
Does a long gap mean IRCC has cancelled my category?
No, a prolonged pause does not indicate that IRCC has discontinued a category. Category additions or removals are formally announced by IRCC in advance. For example, Trades resumed on October 1, 2026 following an 182-day hiatus. However, extended pauses make parallel preparation across other pathways necessary.
Can I be in a category and still get invited in a general round?
Yes, qualifying for a category does not exclude your profile from program-specific or general rounds. Candidates meeting Canadian Experience Class (CEC) criteria or holding a provincial nomination remain eligible for draws in those pathways. In 2026, IRCC conducted 36 program rounds alongside 23 category rounds.
What happens if my profile expires while I wait?
When an Express Entry profile expires after 12 months, you must submit a new profile. Re-entering the pool resets your profile submission timestamp, forfeiting your original tie-breaking rule priority for rounds with identical cut-off scores. Set an administrative renewal alert at month 10 to prepare replacement submissions in advance.
All round figures come from the Express Entry rounds data published by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), checked on October 11, 2026.
