What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is IRCC’s online system for skilled worker applications under three programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Canadian Experience Class and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (IRCC, 2026). You create a profile, IRCC ranks it with the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), and the top candidates get invitations.

Provinces can also nominate candidates from the pool. A nomination adds 600 CRS points.

Is a profile the same as an application?

No. A profile only puts you in the pool. You can apply for permanent residence only if IRCC sends you an invitation, and then you have 60 days to submit a full application.

Why candidates choose Express Entry

  • One profile, three programs: IRCC checks which ones you qualify for
  • A clear ranking: the CRS scores everyone on the same 1,200-point grid
  • Provincial options: a nomination adds 600 points
  • Category rounds: some rounds invite candidates by occupation or French ability

Is Express Entry right for you?

An honest check before you spend money on tests and credential reports.

Person creating an Express Entry profile on a laptop

A good fit if you have

  • Skilled work experience, or qualification in a skilled trade
  • An approved language test result
  • Education that you can back up with an ECA if it is foreign
  • A plan to live outside Quebec

Look at other routes if you

  • Plan to live in Quebec: Quebec selects its own skilled workers
  • Have a job offer in the Atlantic provinces: the Atlantic Immigration Program may fit
  • Want a smaller community: the community pilots may fit

What you need before you create a profile

Prepare these before you open your IRCC account. You have 60 days to finish and submit a profile once you start it, or you start again (IRCC).

Language results

Results from an approved English or French test, valid on the day you apply. Convert them to CLB levels for your score.

Education and ECA

Your highest credential. A foreign credential needs an Educational Credential Assessment to count for points.

Skilled work experience

Your NOC code and the years of skilled work you did. Match your duties to the NOC, not your job title.

Proof of funds

Federal Skilled Worker and Federal Skilled Trades candidates need proof of funds unless they can work in Canada and hold a valid job offer. Canadian Experience Class candidates do not.

Passport and personal details

A valid passport and your family details. IRCC asks for dependent children’s details only if you are invited.

The three programs and the ways IRCC invites you

Federal Skilled Worker Program

For skilled workers with eligible foreign or Canadian work experience. It also scores you on language, education and age.

Canadian Experience Class

For skilled workers with eligible Canadian work experience, such as international graduates and temporary workers.

Federal Skilled Trades Program

For skilled workers who are qualified in a skilled trade. It has its own rules for experience and offers.

Category-based rounds

The Minister sets categories to meet economic goals. IRCC invites the highest-ranking eligible candidates in each category.

Provincial nomination

A nomination adds 600 points. IRCC invites nominated candidates through general and Provincial Nominee Program rounds.

Your CRS score

The CRS scores your profile out of 1,200. IRCC invites the top-ranking candidates in each round. The lowest score invited changes from round to round.

Get your documents ready

Collect these before you start your profile. They save you days later.

Language test results

CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training or PTE Core for English. TEF Canada or TCF Canada for French.

ECA report

For foreign education, order the report from an organization IRCC designates. Check its age before you apply.

Work reference letters

Letters that show your dates, duties, hours per week and pay. They must match the NOC you choose.

Passport

A valid passport for you and each family member on your profile.

Funds information

Know whether your program asks for proof of funds, and have bank letters ready if it does.

6
After you apply

Decision and PR

IRCC reviews your file and decides. If approved, you receive your confirmation of permanent residence.

Five mistakes that slow candidates down

These mistakes cost candidates time and invitations.

Treating the profile as an application

A profile only enters the pool. You can apply for PR only if IRCC invites you.

Answering without proof

Back every answer with a document. A mismatch can sink your application later.

Letting the profile expire

A profile expires if IRCC does not invite you within 12 months. Submit a new one if it does.

Skipping profile updates

Update your profile when you get a new language test, change jobs, marry or have a child.

Missing the 60-day invitation window

An invitation lasts 60 days. After that it expires and your profile leaves the pool.
