Outland Spousal Sponsorship Canada: Bring Your Partner Home
Outland spousal sponsorship is the Family Class route that lets a Canadian citizen or PR sponsor a spouse, common-law or conjugal partner for PR, wherever that partner lives. IRCC currently shows a shorter wait for outland than for inland. You keep appeal rights if refused, and your partner can travel while the file is processed.

What is outland spousal sponsorship?
Outland spousal sponsorship is a Family Class application in which a Canadian citizen or permanent resident sponsors a spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner for permanent residence. It is processed through IRCC’s visa office network, and your partner can live abroad or in Canada while it is processed.
The sponsor signs an undertaking to support the partner financially, and IRCC checks that the relationship is genuine. Most refusals come down to weak relationship evidence, not eligibility.
What happens if you wait to apply?
Processing times rise and fall with IRCC’s workload, and every month you wait adds to your time apart. Police certificates and medical exams can also expire before you submit.
Why most couples choose outland
- Wait: IRCC currently shows outland as faster than inland
- Appeal rights: a refused file can be appealed to the Immigration Appeal Division
- Travel freely during processing
- Apply from anywhere, including from inside Canada
- Work permit option: a partner in Canada with valid status can apply for an open work permit
- Family included: add dependent children to the same application
Is outland sponsorship right for you?
An honest answer before you spend money on tests and fees.
A good fit if you have
- A partner living outside Canada, or in Canada with valid status
- A marriage, 12+ months of living together, or a conjugal relationship you can prove
- A wish to keep appeal rights in case of refusal
- A partner who may need to travel during processing
- Any red flags, such as an age gap, short courtship or past refusal, that need a strong file
Consider another route if
- Your partner is in Canada without valid status
- You were sponsored as a spouse yourself less than 5 years ago
The inland route, or waiting until you become eligible, may fit better. Compare them in our inland vs outland guide or read the spousal sponsorship guide. We will tell you honestly which route suits your case.
Outland spousal sponsorship requirements
Both of you are assessed: the sponsor for eligibility, and your partner for the relationship and admissibility. Here is what IRCC checks.
Sponsor status
You must be at least 18 and a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Citizens can sponsor from abroad if they plan to live in Canada. Permanent residents must live in Canada.
Genuine relationship
You are legally married, have lived together for 12 continuous months, or are conjugal partners. The relationship must be genuine and not entered mainly for immigration.
Undertaking
You sign an undertaking to support your partner financially for 3 years after they become a permanent resident. Most spousal cases have no minimum income requirement.
Sponsorship bars
You cannot sponsor if you receive social assistance other than for disability, are in jail, have an undischarged bankruptcy, or became a PR through a spouse sponsorship less than 5 years ago.
Admissibility
Your partner needs biometrics, a medical exam with an IRCC panel physician and police certificates from every country they lived in for 6+ months since age 18.
Not sure you qualify?
Traps like the 5-year bar and old undertakings catch people out. We check both of you before you pay IRCC fees.
Who you can sponsor
Spouse
You are legally married. The marriage must be valid where it took place and under Canadian law.
You have lived together in a marriage-like relationship for at least 12 continuous months, with short absences only.
You have had a genuine relationship for at least 12 months but could not marry or live together for reasons beyond your control. IRCC looks for a strong, interdependent bond. It is the narrowest category.
Proof of a genuine relationship
Officers want proof that your relationship is real and lasting, and a consistent story across your forms. Thin evidence puts a file at risk. Proof like this works best.
How outland spousal sponsorship works, step by step
Six stages from checking eligibility to your partner landing in Canada.
Check eligibility and choose outland
We check both of you, including the 5-year bar and past undertakings, and confirm outland is the right stream.
Gather relationship proof and documents
Marriage or common-law proof, photos over time, communication history, police certificates and, ideally, an upfront medical.
Submit through the PR Portal
Your partner, as the principal applicant, submits the sponsorship and PR applications together through the PR Portal, with the fees paid online. IRCC rejects an incomplete file.
Acknowledgment, biometrics and sponsor approval
IRCC sends your acknowledgement of receipt, assesses you as a sponsor and asks your partner for biometrics within 30 days and a medical exam.
Background checks and review
The visa office checks security, admissibility and your relationship. It may ask for more documents or an interview.
Your partner lands as a PR
Your partner receives a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and PR visa, lands in Canada and becomes a permanent resident.

Outland Spousal Sponsorship FAQs
What is outland spousal sponsorship in Canada?
Outland spousal sponsorship is the Family Class route for sponsoring a spouse, common-law or conjugal partner for permanent residence. It is processed through IRCC’s visa office network. Your partner can live abroad or in Canada during processing.
How long does outland spousal sponsorship take?
Processing times change with IRCC’s workload and the visa office handling your file. Outland is usually faster than inland, and Quebec-destined files take longer because of the extra provincial step. IRCC’s tool shows about 18 months for outland applications outside Quebec (3 September 2026). See our family processing times page for the current figure.
Can I use outland sponsorship if my spouse is already in Canada?
Yes. Outland is open to partners living anywhere, including in Canada. Many couples already together in Canada choose outland for the faster timeline and appeal rights.
Can my spouse work in Canada during outland processing?
If your partner is physically in Canada with valid status, they can apply for an open work permit while the outland application is processed. A partner living abroad cannot work in Canada until they have a permit or PR.
Can my spouse travel during outland processing?
Yes. Travel during processing is one of the main advantages of outland sponsorship. Your partner still needs a valid visa or eTA to re-enter Canada.
What happens if my outland sponsorship is refused?
The sponsor can appeal to the Immigration Appeal Division within 30 days of receiving the refusal. You can also ask the Federal Court for judicial review, within 15 days if the decision was made in Canada and 60 days if outside Canada. Inland applicants have no appeal to the Immigration Appeal Division. Talk to a licensed professional right away. Read our spousal sponsorship refusal and appeal guide.
How much does it cost to sponsor a spouse in 2026?
IRCC fees are $1,260 for sponsorship, processing and the right of permanent residence fee, plus $85 for biometrics, so $1,345 in total. Each dependent child is $180. See our full cost breakdown for medical, police and translation costs. Read our guide to sponsoring a child or relative.
Is there a minimum income to sponsor a spouse?
In most spousal cases, no minimum income is required. You still sign an undertaking to support your partner for 3 years after they become a permanent resident.
What is the 5-year sponsorship bar?
You cannot sponsor a new spouse or partner if you were sponsored as a spouse yourself and became a permanent resident less than 5 years ago. The bar applies even if that earlier relationship has ended.
What proof of relationship does IRCC want?
IRCC wants consistent proof that your relationship is real, such as a marriage certificate, photos over time, communication history and visits. Common-law partners also need proof of 12 months living together, like a joint lease or shared bills.
Do I have to apply online?
IRCC asks your partner, as the principal applicant, to submit both applications together online through the PR Portal. If you cannot use the online system, you can ask IRCC for an alternate format such as paper, large print or braille.
