Change Your Status in Canada: Visitor, Student or Worker Inside Canada
You can change your temporary status from inside Canada only in some cases. Most people cannot apply for a work permit from inside Canada unless they meet a listed situation, such as holding a valid work or study permit. Students and visitors have their own rules. We check what is allowed before you file.

Can you change your status inside Canada?
Often only in limited cases. For a work permit, you can apply from inside Canada if you hold a valid work or study permit, are eligible for a PGWP while your study permit is valid, have a family member with a valid permit, or fit another listed situation such as a pending spousal sponsorship in Canada. Most other people cannot (IRCC).
What are the common changes?
A student can apply to extend or change schools, a worker can apply to extend or change conditions, a permit holder can change to visitor status with a visitor record, and some visitors can apply for a study permit from inside Canada. If your status already expired, you may need to restore it first. Read our restore status guide, the maintained status guide, the visitor record guide and the PGWP guide.
Key rules at a glance

- To visitor: a worker or student who wants to become a visitor applies for a visitor record before their status expires.
- Lost status: if you lost status, you must restore it first or at the same time.

Why status changes fail
Five problems cause most trouble. Source: IRCC.
Not allowed to apply inside Canada
Most people cannot apply for a work permit from inside Canada. If you are not in a listed situation, the application can be refused or returned.
Applied after expiry
If your status expired, you may need to restore it before or with the change.
Started the new activity early
You cannot start a new job or study until IRCC approves, unless you have an authorization or an exemption.
Missing a PAL or school letter
Students changing schools or levels often need a new PAL or TAL and a new letter of acceptance.
Wrong application type
Different categories use different applications. A visitor record is not a study or work permit.

Deadlines you cannot miss
30 days early
