Manitoba Birth, Marriage and Death Records for Canadian Citizenship by Descent

For citizenship by descent, Manitoba records come from one office: the Manitoba Vital Statistics Branch, which holds records from 1882. You can order records of other people only when they are unrestricted: births over 100 years old, marriages over 80 and deaths over 70. Ask for the birth certificate with parent names.

Where do I order Manitoba records for citizenship by descent?

Order from the Manitoba Vital Statistics Branch. It keeps Manitoba birth, marriage and death records from 1882, and certificates and certified copies cost $30 each (Manitoba Vital Statistics, checked October 2026).

The age of the record decides what you can order. Older records are unrestricted, so you can search the online database and request a certified copy.

Which Manitoba birth document should I order?

Order the birth certificate with the names of the parents. The branch strongly recommends this. A certificate without parents does not show the parent and child link that IRCC needs for every generation.

What to know before you order

  • Fees: $30 per document, and rush service adds $65 in Canada, $75 to the USA or $105 elsewhere
  • Search: a certified copy of an unrestricted record costs $12 if you find it yourself and $30 if staff search
  • Updates: the online database is updated four times a year

Which office holds your record?

The age of the event, or the type of record, decides the office.

  • Births over 100 years old
  • Marriages over 80 years old
  • Deaths over 70 years old

Newer records

  • Births: the person, a named parent, a guardian or an authorized representative
  • Marriages: either spouse, or children or parents if both have died
  • Deaths: any person with a valid reason
