Job Offers and Express Entry: What Counts After March 2025

A job offer no longer adds points to your Express Entry score. IRCC removed those points on 25 March 2025. A valid offer can still help you skip proof of funds, qualify under some programs, or open a provincial or Atlantic route.

What is a valid job offer for Express Entry?

A valid job offer is a written offer from a Canadian employer that shows your pay, your duties and your employment conditions. A work permit alone is not a job offer, and an offer from a Canadian embassy or consulate does not count.

For most Federal Skilled Worker Program and Federal Skilled Trades Program applicants, the employer also needs a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). IRCC lists some exceptions.

Does a job offer still help?

Yes, but not for points. It can exempt you from proof of funds, help you meet the skilled trades requirement, and open the Atlantic Immigration Program and many provincial streams.

Why it matters

  • Points: a job offer adds none since March 2025
  • Funds: an offer plus work permission removes the funds requirement
  • Routes: some programs still need an offer

A job offer helps if you

  • Want to skip proof of funds
  • Apply under the Federal Skilled Trades Program
  • Plan to use the Atlantic Immigration Program
  • Target a provincial stream that wants an employer

You can skip it if you

  • Apply under the Canadian Experience Class
  • Qualify under the Federal Skilled Worker Program without one
  • Only want to raise your CRS score, because offers add no points

Job offer types at a glance

Not every offer counts the same way. Check the IRCC rules for your exact case. Source: IRCC.

LMIA-based offer

The employer gets an LMIA first. This is the usual route for most offers.

LMIA-exempt offer

Covers trade agreements like CUSMA, federal-provincial agreements and significant benefit cases.

Employer on your permit

If your work permit names this employer, the LMIA rule may differ. IRCC lists the exceptions.

No permit or open permit

With no permit, an expired permit or an open work permit, the employer usually needs an LMIA.

Offers that do not count

A work permit alone, or an offer from a Canadian embassy or consulate, is not a valid job offer.

Rules to know before you rely on a job offer

No CRS points

IRCC removed job offer points from the CRS on 25 March 2025. The change applies to current and future candidates.

A written offer

The offer must be in writing and show your pay, your duties and your employment conditions.

Funds exemption

If you can legally work in Canada and have a valid offer, you do not need to show settlement funds.

LMIA rules

Most employers need an LMIA for the offer to count under the federal skilled programs. Some offers are exempt.

Ability to do the job

You must be able to do the job and likely qualify for any provincial licence or certificate it needs.

How to check your job offer

Five actions take you from reading the letter to picking your route.

Read the offer

Check that it is in writing and lists pay, duties and conditions.

Check the employer

Ask whether an LMIA or an exemption applies to the job.

Check your permit

Look at your work permit status and the employer named on it.

Match your program

Decide if you will use the offer for the trades program, a provincial stream or the Atlantic route.

Declare it correctly

Put the offer in your profile only if it is valid. Keep every document.

Six steps from your first check to your decision.

1
First check

Drop the points myth

A job offer adds no CRS points. Do not pay anyone to raise your score with an offer.

2
Quick step

Confirm it is valid

Match the letter to the IRCC rules for a valid offer.

3
Your employer

Ask about the LMIA

Ask the employer if the job has an LMIA or an exemption.

4
Plan ahead

Check licensing

Some jobs need a provincial licence. Start early, because it takes time.

5
Your route

Pick your program

Match the offer to a federal program, a provincial stream or the Atlantic route.

6
Final check

Get it reviewed

Have a licensed consultant read the offer before you rely on it.

Five mistakes that sink job offer plans

These mistakes cost time or put your application at risk.

Expecting CRS points

Job offers add no points since 25 March 2025.

Paying for an offer

Employers cannot charge you for an LMIA. Be careful with anyone who sells offers.

Using a permit as an offer

A work permit alone is not a job offer.

Missing details

An offer with no pay, duties or conditions may not count.

Ignoring licensing

Some jobs need a provincial licence. You must be likely to qualify for it.
