What is the Express Entry researchers category?

The Researchers with Canadian Work Experience category is a set of targeted Express Entry draws for academics who already teach and research in Canada. IRCC launched it on February 18, 2026 to keep researchers who are already contributing to Canadian universities.

Years of study often cost academics CRS points for age, even while they publish and teach in Canada. In this category you compete only with other eligible researchers, so the pool is far smaller than in general draws.

What happens if you wait to apply?

Academic contracts are short, and your work permit usually ends with your appointment or postdoc. If your permit runs out before you are invited, your research and teaching in Canada are on hold, and IRCC publishes no draw schedule.

Why researchers use this category

  • A small pool: you compete only with other eligible academics
  • Age matters less: years of study no longer hold you back against the general pool
  • Two codes, broad reach: professors, lecturers and teaching or research assistants
  • Freedom: no longer tied to a short academic contract or one institution
  • No job offer required to receive an invitation
  • Family included: bring your spouse and children
  • Continuity: keep your lab, students and grants in Canada

Is the researchers category right for you?

An honest answer before you spend money on tests and fees.

A good fit if you have

  • 12 months of paid work in Canada in NOC 41200 or 41201 in the last 3 years
  • Experience that adds up, even if it came from several contracts
  • Work that was not done while you were a full-time student
  • English or French at CLB 7 or higher, or you are ready to test
  • Eligibility for an Express Entry program, usually the Canadian Experience Class

Consider another route if

  • All of your academic experience is outside Canada
  • Your teaching or research work in Canada was done while you were a full-time student
  • You work in a college or school role outside NOC 41200 and 41201

General Express Entry, the education category or a provincial stream for graduates may fit better.

Researchers category eligibility requirements

You must qualify for one Express Entry program, then meet the Canadian academic experience rule. Here is what IRCC checks.

Language proficiency

Take IELTS General, CELPIP General or PTE Core for English, or TEF Canada or TCF Canada for French. The Canadian Experience Class needs CLB 7 for TEER 0 and 1 jobs, which includes both researcher codes.

Education

The Canadian Experience Class does not require an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA), but an ECA for a foreign degree earns CRS points. A Canadian degree counts without one.

Canadian academic experience

At least 12 months of full-time paid work, or the same amount part-time, in Canada in NOC 41200 or 41201 within the last 3 years. It does not need to be continuous. Experience outside Canada does not count, and work done while you were a full-time student does not count toward Express Entry.

Proof of funds

Federal Skilled Worker candidates must show settlement funds, from $15,263 CAD for one person. You are exempt if you are invited under the Canadian Experience Class or hold a valid job offer.

Admissibility

A medical exam with an IRCC panel physician for you and your dependants, and police certificates from every country you have lived in for 6+ months since age 18.

The 2 eligible researcher occupations

Professors and lecturers

University professors and lecturers (NOC 41200), who teach and conduct research at universities in Canada.

TA/RA

Teaching and research assistants

Post-secondary teaching and research assistants (NOC 41201), who support teaching and research at universities and colleges.

Both codes are TEER 1

Both occupations are TEER 1, so the Canadian Experience Class needs CLB 7. Your experience must be in Canada within the last 3 years.

Researcher Express Entry FAQs

Two TEER 1 occupations qualify: university professors and lecturers (NOC 41200) and post-secondary teaching and research assistants (NOC 41201). You need 12 months of paid work in Canada in one of them within the last 3 years.

Not for this category. Your 12 months must be in Canada. Your academic career abroad can still earn CRS points in other ways, such as for education. See how the CRS works and how to improve your CRS score.

Not if you were a full-time student at the time. Express Entry does not count work done while studying full-time, so we check each appointment before you rely on it.

Often, yes, if your paid postdoc duties match NOC 41200 or 41201 and you were not a full-time student. We confirm the code based on your appointment letter and duties.

No. You need a total of 12 months, full-time or the same amount part-time, within the last 3 years. Several short contracts can add up.

There is no fixed score, and the category is new. Check our Express Entry draw tracker to see whether a researchers round has been held and at what cut-off.

IRCC publishes no schedule for category draws. Keep your profile active and your test results valid so you are ready for any round, including CEC and general draws.

Most academics already working in Canada qualify through the Canadian Experience Class. It needs CLB 7 for these TEER 1 roles and does not require an ECA.

No. A job offer is not required to receive an invitation, and since March 2025 a job offer no longer adds CRS points.

It depends mostly on how long you wait in the pool for an invitation. After an Invitation to Apply, you have 60 days to submit, and IRCC aims to process most complete applications within 6 months.
