Your Express Entry chances depend on which draws you can enter, not just your CRS score. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) rounds data shows 59 draws and 135,215 invitations from January 1 to October 1, 2026, and not one was a general draw open to every profile. Each round targeted Canadian experience, French, a provincial nomination or a set of jobs.
That one fact changes how you should read your score: a CRS of 490 sounds close to a cut-off of 476. But if the 476 draw was for trades and you are an accountant, that number was never your number. Here is how the 2026 draws actually split.
Why are your Express Entry chances lower than your CRS score suggests?
Your score is only compared with people in the same draw, and in 2026 IRCC has not run a single draw open to all programs. So the cut-off that matters is the one for the draw types you qualify for. Many people compare their score with the lowest cut-off they see, which is often a category they cannot enter.
We pulled every 2026 round from IRCC’s Express Entry rounds data file on October 12, 2026. It is the same data IRCC shows on its official rounds page. The last round in the file is draw 447 on October 1. We checked every row against our own 2026 draw tracker, and the rows match.
Where did the 2026 Express Entry invitations go?
Two draw types took most of the invitations: Canadian Experience Class rounds issued 55,250 invitations, about 40.9% of the 135,215 total. French-language rounds issued 50,500, about 37.3%. Together that is 105,750 invitations, or about 78.2% of everything IRCC sent this year.
| Draw type | Rounds | Invitations | Share | CRS cut-off range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Canadian Experience Class | 17 | 55,250 | 40.9% | 507 to 523 |
| French-language proficiency | 10 | 50,500 | 37.3% | 382 to 420 |
| Healthcare and social services | 3 | 11,500 | 8.5% | 467 to 475 |
| Provincial Nominee Program | 19 | 9,270 | 6.9% | 697 to 805 |
| Trades | 2 | 6,500 | 4.8% | 476 to 477 |
| Senior managers with Canadian experience | 3 | 1,000 | 0.7% | 389 to 429 |
| Physicians with Canadian experience | 3 | 891 | 0.7% | 169 to 223 |
| Transport | 1 | 300 | 0.2% | 470 |
| Skilled military recruits | 1 | 4 | 0.0% | 368 |
| Total | 59 | 135,215 | 100% |
Shares are our own math: invitations for each type divided by 135,215. The provincial nominee cut-offs include the 600 points a nomination adds.
Which Express Entry chances does each profile really have?
If you work in Canada now, your main lane is the Canadian Experience Class, where the cut-off stayed between 507 and 523 across 17 rounds. At 490, you were below every one of them. At 515, you would have cleared 8 of the 17 and missed the other 9.
If your French is strong, your lane looks very different, because French rounds ran from 382 to 420. A score of 410 with good French test results would have cleared 8 of those 10 rounds. Without French, that same 410 cleared nothing in that lane.
If you live abroad, have no Canadian work, no strong French, no nomination, and your job is not in a category IRCC drew from, no 2026 round has been open to you yet. That is true at 450 and at 500. This is the profile that overestimates its chances most.
What makes people overestimate their Express Entry chances?
The biggest mistake is reading the lowest cut-off of the year as a target. The 2026 low is 169, set in a physicians round on February 19, and only physicians with Canadian work experience could enter it. The number tells everyone else almost nothing.
The second mistake is counting points you cannot prove. IRCC says your language test results must be less than 2 years old. Your educational credential assessment (ECA, the report that checks a degree earned outside Canada) must be less than 5 years old. Work experience needs reference letters with the details an officer checks. Our guide to Express Entry reference letter requirements covers that.
The third mistake is assuming the next round will look like the last one. Category rounds are irregular, and trades ran twice this year, in April and October. The October 1 trades draw shows how big one round can be: 3,500 invitations at 476.
How can you improve your real Express Entry chances?
Start by naming your lane, then work on the number that lane uses. For most people abroad, the fastest real gain is a provincial nomination or strong French. A nomination adds 600 points under IRCC’s CRS criteria, and French test results can open the French rounds, which ran far below the Canadian Experience Class cut-off.
If you are already in Canada, the Canadian Experience Class cut-off is your benchmark. Our look at the CEC cut-off in 2026 shows how tight that range has been. A retest for higher English scores can also add points.
Run your numbers in our Express Entry CRS calculator. Then compare the result with the cut-offs for your lane only, not the whole table.
Frequently asked questions
Has there been a general Express Entry draw in 2026?
No, IRCC’s rounds data shows 59 draws from January 1 to October 1, 2026, and every one targeted a specific group: the Canadian Experience Class, French speakers, provincial nominees, or set occupations such as healthcare and trades. Your chances depend on which of those groups you belong to.
What CRS score do I need for Express Entry in 2026?
The required CRS score in 2026 depends on your specific draw category. As of October 2026, the CRS cut-off ranges for major categories were:
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC): 507 to 523
- French-language proficiency: 382 to 420
- Healthcare and social services: 467 to 475
- Trades: 476 to 477
- Provincial Nominee Program (PNP): 697 to 805 (includes 600 nomination points)
Why did I not get an invitation with a high CRS score?
Because your profile did not match the specific categories targeted by IRCC. Most likely, no round in 2026 was open to your profile at that score. Every round targeted a specific group, so a high score outside those groups did not count. If you have no Canadian work, no strong French, no nomination and no category job, you had no lane this year.
How old can my language test and ECA be for Express Entry?
IRCC says language test results must be less than 2 years old, and an educational credential assessment must be less than 5 years old. If either one expires, you lose the points it gave you until you get a new one.
