What does the category finder do?
The finder checks whether your NOC 2021 code or job title is on a current Express Entry category list. It covers healthcare, STEM, trades, education, transport, physicians, senior managers, researchers and skilled military recruits.
The French-language category has no NOC list, so it is not searchable here. You qualify with CLB 7 or higher in all four French abilities.
Does a listed occupation guarantee an invitation?
No. A listed occupation only makes you eligible for category-based rounds. IRCC then invites the highest CRS scores among eligible candidates, and it announces its categories in advance.
What your result tells you
- Listed: you may qualify for a category round if you have 12 months of experience in it
- Not listed: you can still hold a profile, but no category round will pick you
- Always: you must qualify for the FSW, FST or CEC program first
- Rounds: not every category has a round, so check the latest draws

Five mistakes that cost you a category
A wrong input gives a wrong score. Watch for these.
Matching by job title
IRCC looks at your duties, not your title. Match your main duties to the NOC 2021 description.
Counting less than 12 months
You need 12 months of full-time work, or equal part-time hours, in one listed occupation.
Mixing occupations
The 12 months must come from a single listed occupation. Time in two different occupations does not add up.
Ignoring the 3-year window
Only experience from the past 3 years counts. Older work does not.
Stopping at the list
A listed NOC makes you eligible. Your CRS score still decides who gets invited.

Category finder FAQs
What are Express Entry categories?
Categories are groups of candidates IRCC invites in special rounds, based on things like occupation or French ability. You must still qualify for the FSW, FST or CEC program.
How many Express Entry categories are there?
There are 10 current categories: French-language proficiency, healthcare and social services, STEM, trades, education, transport, physicians, senior managers, researchers and skilled military recruits.
How much experience do I need for a category?
You need at least 12 months of full-time work, or equal part-time hours, in one listed occupation within the past 3 years. It does not need to be continuous.
Does work experience abroad count?
Yes for the healthcare, STEM, trades, education and transport categories. Physicians, senior managers and researchers need that work done in Canada.
What if my job title is different from the list?
Match your main duties to the NOC 2021 description, not your title. If your code is on a list, the occupation counts.
Does a listed NOC guarantee an invitation?
No. It only makes you eligible when IRCC holds a round for that category. IRCC then invites the highest CRS scores among eligible candidates.
Does the French category need a NOC code?
No. You need CLB 7 or higher in all four French abilities, and your occupation does not matter.
What is a TEER level?
TEER stands for training, education, experience and responsibilities. It runs from 0 to 5 in NOC 2021, and the category lists include occupations at TEER 0 to 3.
Can I use Express Entry if my NOC is not listed?
Yes, you can hold a profile if you qualify for the FSW, FST or CEC program. Category rounds will not pick you, so check the latest draws and your CRS score.
Is this category finder official?
No. It is built from the IRCC category page and gives general guidance. Always confirm your NOC and the round instructions with IRCC.
