Study in Malaysia: Get Admitted to the Right University or College
You can study in Malaysia if an approved Malaysian institution accepts you into a full-time program, you meet its entry rules, and EMGS and Malaysian Immigration approve your Student Pass with an electronic Visa Approval Letter. Why do students choose Malaysia?
Students choose Malaysia because most courses are taught in English, one official body handles your Student Pass, and graduates from some countries can stay up to 12 months on a Graduate Pass without an employer sponsor (EMGS and Malaysian Immigration, October 2026).
Three reasons come up most often:
- Study in English: EMGS says English is widely used and most courses are taught in English.
- One official route: EMGS handles your Student Pass application, and its client charter is 14 working days for a complete application.
- A route after study: a Graduate Pass for bachelor degree graduates or higher, but only for the nationalities EMGS lists.
Can I get admitted? What do I need for each study level?
To be admitted, you need the right education for the level, the language level the institution asks for, and a place at an approved institution. For diploma and degree programs, EMGS says you need at least 12 years of education and a recognised national or international exam. Each institution sets its own entry rules, so the program page has the last word.
| Study level | Education usually needed | Language | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foundation or pre-university | Secondary school | Set by the institution | A foundation course can lead to a degree when your marks or language score are just short. |
| Diploma | At least 12 years of education and a recognised exam | Set by the institution | You apply through the institution. It sets the entry marks. |
| Bachelor | At least 12 years of education and a recognised exam | Set by the institution, usually English | You apply directly to the institution. Only full-time study qualifies for a Student Pass. |
| Master | A bachelor degree | Set by the program | Postgraduate students can bring dependants. |
| Doctorate | A master degree | Set by the institution | Check the institution for its research requirements. |
The examples come from EMGS and Malaysian Immigration pages, read in October 2026. Your institution sets the final requirement.

What language level do I need to study in Malaysia?
Each institution sets its own language level for each program. EMGS says most courses are taught in English, so an English test score is the usual proof. The EMGS document list for the Student Pass names no language test.
| Where language matters | What it means |
|---|---|
| The institution | Sets its own language level for each program. Most courses are taught in English. |
| The visa application | The EMGS document list names no language test. |
| Your offer letter | Is one of the documents EMGS asks for with your Student Pass application. |
Check each university’s rule before you book a test, because accepted tests and scores differ.
How much money do I need to show?
Malaysia lists no minimum bank balance for the Student Pass. You pay your institution’s tuition, plus the EMGS and Immigration costs. For a new application at a higher education institution, EMGS lists RM 1,728 for processing, RM 159 for the Visa Approval Letter and RM 60 for the Student Pass, plus compulsory insurance and a medical screening (EMGS, October 2026).
| What you must cover | Amount (October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Tuition and fees | Set by each institution |
| EMGS processing, new application | RM 1,728 for higher education institutions, or RM 864 for a short course |
| Visa Approval Letter (eVAL) | RM 159 |
| Student Pass | RM 60 |
| Health insurance | Compulsory. EMGS plans cost RM 498 to RM 644 a year, or your institution may accept your own policy |
| Medical screening | RM 250 to RM 350 depending on the clinic, within 7 working days of arrival |
| i-Kad student card | RM 50 if you collect it at EMGS, or RM 60.60 by courier |
| Single-Entry Visa | Only if your nationality needs one. The fee depends on your country. |
| Minimum bank balance | Not listed for the Student Pass |
Living costs: EMGS gives student examples, not a government minimum. On-campus housing is about USD 50 to 150 a month, off-campus housing about USD 100 to 300, and food can cost as little as USD 3 a day (EMGS cost of living guide, October 2026).
What to ask your institution: the total first-year cost, including tuition, housing, insurance and the medical screening.
Fees: Tuition varies by institution and program. We show your exact first-year fee when we match you.
Can I work while I study and after I graduate?
Yes, with limits. Students at public universities and private higher education institutions can apply to work part-time up to 20 hours a week in approved jobs: restaurants, petrol stations, mini markets, hotels and university areas. EMGS says this applies during semester breaks or holidays longer than 7 days (EMGS and Malaysian Immigration, October 2026). The Immigration Department’s own Student Pass page words the same 20 hours as “during their study period”, so follow the stricter EMGS rule. You need Immigration approval first, and your institution applies with you. You cannot work as a cashier or at a front desk, and students at language centres do not qualify. Do not plan to pay your living costs from work.
After a bachelor degree or higher, graduates can apply for a Graduate Pass that lets you stay and work up to 12 months without an employer sponsor, and your dependants can join. EMGS lists 32 eligible nationalities, so check yours first. You need a valid Student Pass, a passport valid for 18 months, one year of local health insurance and a personal bond with a Malaysian sponsor who earns at least RM 1,500 a month. Chinese and Indian nationals are eligible until 31 December 2026, case by case.
When can I start studying in Malaysia?
Start dates and deadlines are set by each institution, so check yours first. After you accept your offer, you or your institution apply for the Student Pass through EMGS while you are outside Malaysia. EMGS lists 14 working days for a complete application, and you may enter Malaysia only after you receive the visa approval letter, which is valid for 6 months (EMGS and Malaysian Immigration, October 2026).
| Step | What to know |
|---|---|
| 1. Choose an approved institution and course | The institution must be approved by the Ministry of Higher Education and allowed to enrol international students. Only full-time courses qualify. |
| 2. Apply to the institution | Ask for its entry requirements and dates. You need an offer letter. |
| 3. The Student Pass application goes to EMGS | You or your institution apply through the EMGS portal or the STARS system while you are outside Malaysia. |
| 4. Get your Visa Approval Letter | EMGS lists 14 working days for a complete application. If your nationality needs a visa, you then apply for a Single-Entry Visa online. |
| 5. Arrive, take the medical and endorse your pass | Enter only after the letter arrives. Take the medical screening within 7 working days, and your institution endorses the Student Pass. |
Dates change every year, so check your institution’s current dates before you plan.
How does admission work with AIA?
We find courses that fit your marks, language level and budget, apply for you, and follow each application until you have an offer. There is no fee for this. You only pay what the institution charges, such as an application fee or a tuition deposit.

What about the Malaysian Student Pass?
EMGS handles your Student Pass application, usually through your institution. EMGS checks your academics and sends the application to Immigration for an electronic Visa Approval Letter (eVAL). If your nationality needs a visa, you then get a Single-Entry Visa through the Malaysian eVISA system. After you arrive you take a medical screening within 7 days and your institution endorses your Student Pass. AIA supports your admission. The visa steps are separate and you handle them yourself or through your institution.
EMGS asks for a passport photo, your passport bio page, your offer letter, a health declaration form and your academic certificates. Immigration asks for a passport valid for at least 18 months and health insurance valid for at least 12 months. Read the official page: Malaysian Immigration Department, Student Pass.
