Education Express Entry: Canadian PR for Teachers and Educators

Canada’s education occupations category lets teachers, early childhood educators and teaching assistants compete in their own Express Entry draws, which often need lower CRS scores than general rounds. Five NOC codes qualify. You need 12 months of paid work in one of them in the last 3 years, earned in Canada or abroad. See every recent cut-off in our Express Entry draw tracker.

What is the Express Entry education category?

The education occupations category is a set of targeted Express Entry draws for five teaching and childcare occupations. IRCC added it in 2025 to help fill shortages of teachers, early childhood educators and support staff across Canada.

You still create a normal Express Entry profile under the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Canadian Experience Class or the Federal Skilled Trades Program. The difference is that education rounds rank you only against other eligible educators, so the cut-off is often lower than in general draws.

What happens if you wait to apply?

Your language test and ECA expire, and IRCC publishes no draw schedule, so rounds can arrive with little warning. When candidates tie on score, the profile created first gets the invitation.

Why educators use this category

  • Lower cut-offs: education rounds often invite below general and CEC draws
  • Foreign experience counts: your 12 months can be earned outside Canada
  • Not just teachers: early childhood educators and teaching assistants qualify too
  • No job offer required to receive an invitation
  • Family included: bring your spouse and children
  • French advantage: French-speaking teachers may also qualify for the French category
  • Provincial nomination boost of 600 points through a PNP

Is the education category right for you?

An honest answer before you spend money on tests and fees.

A good fit if you have

  • 12 months of paid work in one of the 5 eligible occupations in the last 3 years
  • Experience in Canada or abroad (gaps are fine, as long as it adds up)
  • English or French at CLB 7 or higher, or you are ready to test
  • Your degree or diploma assessed with an ECA, if you studied outside Canada
  • Reference letters that show your teaching duties, grade levels and hours

Consider another route if

  • You teach at a university or college (the researchers category may fit instead)
  • You run a child-care centre (NOC 40030 is not in this category)
  • You have less than 12 months in a single eligible occupation

General Express Entry, a provincial stream or the Researchers with Canadian Work Experience category may fit better.

Education category eligibility requirements

You must first qualify for one Express Entry program, then meet the education work experience rule. Here is what IRCC checks.

Language proficiency

Take IELTS General, CELPIP General or PTE Core for English, or TEF Canada or TCF Canada for French. The Federal Skilled Worker Program needs CLB 7 in all four abilities. CLB 9 earns far more CRS points.

Education

Foreign degrees need an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) from WES, ICES, IQAS or CES. This is separate from provincial teacher certification, which you need to teach in public schools.

Education work experience

At least 12 months of full-time paid work, or 1,560 part-time hours, in one of the 5 eligible occupations within the last 3 years. It does not need to be continuous and can be earned in Canada or abroad.

Proof of funds

Federal Skilled Worker candidates must show settlement funds, from $15,263 CAD for one person. You are exempt if you are invited under the Canadian Experience Class or hold a valid job offer.

Admissibility

A medical exam with an IRCC panel physician for you and your dependants, and police certificates from every country you have lived in for 6+ months since age 18.

CRS scores in education draws

Education cut-offs move with every round and are often lower than in general draws. When candidates tie on the cut-off score, the profile created first is invited. A provincial teaching licence does not add CRS points. Check the latest scores in our Express Entry draw tracker. See how the CRS works and how to improve your CRS score.

Education Express Entry FAQs

Five occupations qualify: secondary school teachers (NOC 41220), elementary and kindergarten teachers (41221), early childhood educators and assistants (42202), instructors of persons with disabilities (42203) and teacher assistants (43100). IRCC matches you by your real duties, not your job title.

No. You do not need a provincial teaching licence to enter the Express Entry pool or get PR. You do need one to teach in public schools, so start your certification file, such as with the Ontario College of Teachers, while your immigration file moves.

Yes. Early childhood educators and assistants are covered by NOC 42202. Child-care centre administrators are not, because they fall under NOC 40030.

Yes. Your 12 months can be earned in Canada or abroad. It must be paid work in one eligible occupation within the last 3 years.

No. University professors and post-secondary teaching assistants are covered by the Researchers with Canadian Work Experience category instead. That category needs 12 months of Canadian experience.

There is no fixed score. Education cut-offs change every round and are often lower than general draws, so check the latest result in our Express Entry draw tracker and plan for a buffer above it.

IRCC publishes no schedule for education draws, and the gap between rounds can be several months. Keep your profile active and your test results valid so you are ready for any round.

No. Your 12 months must be in a single eligible occupation. For example, time as a teacher assistant cannot be added to time as an elementary teacher.

Yes. Strong French earns extra CRS points, and French at NCLC 7 or higher in all four abilities can also qualify you for the French category. That gives you two sets of rounds instead of one.

No. A job offer is not required to receive an invitation. Most education candidates we help are invited without one.
