The key takeaway is: Early childhood educators (NOC 42202) can apply for Canadian permanent residence through Express Entry, the French-language draws or a provincial nomination. IRCC has held only two education category draws ever, and none in 2026, so most educators need a strong CRS score or a provincial route (IRCC, Oct 2026).

This guide shows which routes fit an early childhood educator (ECE), what CRS scores recent draws needed and which provinces want childcare workers this year. It also lists the first five steps to take.

Key takeaways

  • Early childhood educators and assistants are NOC 42202, a TEER 2 occupation. That makes you eligible for the Federal Skilled Worker Program and the Canadian Experience Class.
  • The education category has had only 2 draws ever: 1,000 invitations in May 2025 and 2,500 in September 2025. There has been no education draw in 2026.
  • Recent 2026 cut-offs were 518 for the Canadian Experience Class and 382 for French-language draws, so language and French can matter more than your job title.
  • British Columbia, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia name childcare or ECE graduates in their 2026 priorities. A nomination adds 600 CRS points.
  • Do not wait for an education draw. Get your credential assessed, take a language test and check your CRS score now.

Can early childhood educators immigrate to Canada?

Yes. Early childhood educators can apply for permanent residence through Express Entry, a provincial nominee program or both. You need your credential assessed, a language test result and, for most routes, at least one year of skilled work experience (IRCC, Oct 2026).

Is early childhood educator an Express Entry occupation?

Yes. IRCC lists early childhood educators and assistants as NOC 42202, a TEER 2 occupation. TEER 0 to 3 jobs count as skilled work for the Federal Skilled Worker Program and the Canadian Experience Class. You can check your code with our Find Your NOC Code tool.

Which Express Entry programs fit an early childhood educator?

Two programs fit most educators, and the right one depends on where you have worked. The Federal Skilled Trades Program does not apply to this occupation.

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program: for work experience in or outside Canada. You need at least one year of skilled work, CLB 7 in all four language abilities and a score of 67 on the program grid. See our Federal Skilled Worker Program guide.
  • Canadian Experience Class: for work experience in Canada. You need one year of skilled work in the last three years on a valid permit and CLB 5 for a TEER 2 job. See our Canadian Experience Class guide.

What is the Express Entry education category?

The education category is a type of Express Entry draw for five teaching and childcare occupations. You qualify if you have 12 months of full-time work in one of them within the last three years, in Canada or abroad (IRCC, June 2026). Early childhood educators and assistants (42202) are on the list.

Which occupations are in the education category?

  • 41220: Secondary school teachers
  • 41221: Elementary school and kindergarten teachers
  • 42202: Early childhood educators and assistants
  • 42203: Instructors of persons with disabilities
  • 43100: Elementary and secondary school teacher assistants

How often does IRCC hold education draws?

Rarely. IRCC has held two education draws since it created the category, and none in 2026. The last one was on September 17, 2025, which is 381 days before this post (IRCC, Oct 2026).

Should you wait for an education draw?

No. IRCC publishes no schedule, and an education draw only invites candidates who already have a profile in the pool. Use the time to raise your score and to look at the other draws and provincial routes. Our education category guide tracks the rules.

What CRS score do early childhood educators need?

There is no fixed score for educators, because the cut-off depends on the type of draw. In 2026, the Canadian Experience Class, healthcare, trades and French-language draws ran between CRS 382 and 518, and provincial nominee draws ran between 697 and 805 (IRCC, Oct 2026). Your best route is the draw that fits your profile, not the one that fits your job title.

Trades occupationsOctober 1476

Your education points depend on your credential. In the CRS grid for a single applicant, a two-year post-secondary diploma earns 98 points and a bachelor’s degree earns 120. Test your numbers with our CRS calculator.

Does a job offer add CRS points for an educator?

No. IRCC removed job offer points from the CRS on March 25, 2025. A job offer can still help you under some provincial streams and the Atlantic Immigration Program. Read our job offers guide.

Which provinces nominate early childhood educators in 2026?

British Columbia, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia name childcare or early childhood educators in their 2026 priorities. A provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points on the Express Entry route, so it can beat a score gap. Priorities change often, so check each page before you apply (checked October 2026).

How does British Columbia treat early childhood educators?

BC invites workers under three priorities, and its Care priority includes childcare. An ECE with a valid ECE One Year or Five Year Certificate from the ECE Registry earns 5 extra points for a BC professional designation. ECE Assistant certificates do not earn those points (BC PNP guide, May 2026). See our BC PNP guide and BC PNP points calculator.

What does Prince Edward Island offer?

PEI prioritizes health care, trades and childcare. You need a full-time, non-seasonal job offer from a PEI employer. Your EOI stays active for six months, and the fee is $300 if you are invited. Read our PEI PNP guide.

Can ECE graduates use Nova Scotia?

Yes. The Nova Scotia Graduate stream lists early childhood educators among the graduate occupations it supports. Nova Scotia selects from its EOI pool by labour market need, and selected worker candidates pay a $1,000 fee (checked October 2026). See our Nova Scotia PNP guide.

What happened to Ontario’s early childhood educator draws?

Ontario ran targeted draws for healthcare and early childhood education occupations under its old streams. It invited 1,649 candidates on February 2, 2026 and 1,635 on April 8, 2026 (ontario.ca, Oct 2026). Those streams closed in 2026, and Ontario Workforce Priority now needs a job offer. See our Ontario PNP guide and the PNP draw tracker.

What should an early childhood educator do first?

Start with your documents and your language score, because they take the longest. These five steps put you in the pool with the best profile you can build.

  1. Step 1: Match your duties to NOC 42202. Read the lead statement and main duties of the code. IRCC checks duties, not job titles, so a wrong code can cost you the invitation.
  2. Step 2: Order your credential assessment. Foreign credentials need an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) for Express Entry education points. See our ECA guide.
  3. Step 3: Take a language test. Aim for CLB 9 in all four abilities. Also test French if you can, because NCLC 7 opens the French-language draws.
  4. Step 4: Check your CRS score. Use the CRS calculator and read how to improve your score.
  5. Step 5: Create your profile and check the provinces. Enter the pool, then compare the provinces above. Keep your documents ready for the 60-day deadline after an invitation.

Frequently asked questions about early childhood educator PR

Does Express Entry have a draw just for early childhood educators?

No. Early childhood educators and assistants (42202) belong to the education category, which also covers teachers and teacher assistants. IRCC has held only two education draws, and none in 2026 (IRCC, Oct 2026).

When is the next education Express Entry draw?

IRCC has not announced one, and it does not publish a schedule. The last education draw was on September 17, 2025, and there has been none in 2026.

Do I need a job offer to immigrate as an early childhood educator?

Not for Express Entry. The Federal Skilled Worker Program and the Canadian Experience Class do not require one, and job offers add no CRS points. Most provincial streams for educators do need a job offer.

Can early childhood assistants qualify?

The education category lists early childhood educators and assistants together under 42202. Your duties must match the NOC lead statement and main duties. Some provinces treat assistants differently, so check each page. For example, BC does not award designation points for ECE Assistant certificates.

Does my foreign ECE diploma count?

It can, if an approved organization assesses it. An ECA shows how your credential compares with a Canadian one, and IRCC uses it for education points. You may also need to register with a provincial regulator to work as an ECE.

Which language level do I need as an early childhood educator?

You need CLB 7 in all four abilities for the Federal Skilled Worker Program. For the Canadian Experience Class, a TEER 2 job needs CLB 5. Higher scores earn more CRS points.
