The Express Entry police certificate requirements are simple to state and easy to get wrong. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) says you and every family member aged 18 or older need a certificate from each country where you stayed 6 months in a row or longer in the last 10 years. Your current country’s certificate must be issued within 6 months of applying.

These rules come from the Express Entry police certificate page published by IRCC, last changed on 22 June 2026, and from IRCC’s country by country instructions. You get 60 days after your invitation to apply (ITA), and police certificates are often the slowest papers in the file.

What are the Express Entry police certificate requirements?

ou must provide a police certificate for every country if it meets all of the following conditions:

  • Duration: You stayed there for 6 months in a row or longer.
  • Timeframe: The stay occurred during the last 10 years.
  • Age: You were 18 years of age or older at the time.
  • Exclusion: Time spent inside Canada does not count.

This rule applies equally to you, your spouse, and any dependent children aged 18 or older. Note that an officer retains the right to request additional certificates going all the way back to age 18 if they deem it necessary.

Count the countries first. List every place you lived for 6 straight months since you turned 18, then do the same for your spouse. That list is your map of the Express Entry police certificate requirements for your family.

This is where a Gulf-based file can grow fast. Picture an engineer from Karachi who studied in Malaysia and has worked in Dubai for 7 years. That can mean three certificates, each with its own timeline.

How recent do Express Entry police certificate requirements say it must be?

It depends on where you live now. The certificate for your current country must be issued no more than 6 months before you submit your application. For every other country, IRCC only asks that it be issued after the last time you stayed there for 6 months in a row or longer.

That second rule saves people time. If you left India in 2021, a certificate issued in 2022 can still work, even if India printed an expiry date on it. IRCC says an expired certificate can be accepted when it meets the issue date rule and is not for your current country.

Plan around the current country rule. IRCC may ask for a new certificate later, since files take time. Order it too early and it may be stale when you submit.

What if you cannot get a police certificate within 60 days?

Submit what you have by the deadline, with a letter of explanation and proof that you made your best effort to get the certificate on time. IRCC says an officer reviews that proof and decides whether your effort was enough.

Best effort means paper you can show. Keep the receipt, the application number, the email from the embassy or the appointment booking. A letter that only says you are waiting carries far less weight.

Start before the invitation if you can. Our guide to preparing for Express Entry category draws explains why the 60 days goes fast once the invitation lands.

How do you get a police certificate from the UAE?

IRCC says one police clearance from any emirate covers the whole country. You can apply in person at the police department of your emirate, through a representative with a power of attorney, or online through Dubai Police. You can also apply in person at the nearest UAE embassy.

The UAE page on IRCC’s site was last updated on 27 October 2020. Check the emirate’s own police site for current fees and steps before you apply.

If you have already left the UAE, add travel time. An embassy visit in person is a real cost when the nearest UAE mission is in another city.

How do you get a police certificate from Pakistan?

IRCC lists a Police Character Certificate or Police Clearance Certificate, issued through the provincial police. Each province runs its own process, and in Punjab you can apply at any Police Khidmat Markaz. From abroad, you apply at the nearest Pakistani embassy or consulate.

From abroad, IRCC says to bring the completed PCC-4 form, certified copies of your passport and national ID card, three passport photos and the fee.

A relative in Pakistan can also apply for you with an affidavit and an authority letter. If you live in the Gulf, ask whether that is quicker than an embassy visit.

How do you get police certificates from India and the United States?

For India, IRCC lists a Police Clearance Certificate from your district police station or passport office inside India, or from an Indian embassy, consulate or BLS International Centre abroad. For the United States, IRCC requires an Identity History Summary issued by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which is based on your fingerprints.

Fingerprints for a police certificate are not the same as the biometrics for your Canadian file, IRCC says. You may need both.

Which mistakes break the Express Entry police certificate requirements?

Watch for three avoidable problems: a missing country, a current country certificate older than 6 months, and copies IRCC will not accept. IRCC asks for colour scans of the original. It says certified true copies and unauthorized copies will not be accepted, so scan the document itself.

Check your spouse’s history as closely as your own. A forgotten 8 month posting abroad is still 6 months in a row.

The same care applies to your work proof. Our guide to Express Entry reference letter requirements covers what an officer checks there.
