Proof of Citizenship From the US: Does a Representative in Canada Save Time?

A representative in Canada does not move your proof of citizenship from the US to a faster line. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) lists one wait for Canada and the United States, about 34 months in its processing time data updated October 9, 2026. Only people outside both countries get extra mailing time.

We hear this question a lot from Americans with a Canadian parent or grandparent. Some were told a “rep in Canada” will cut months off the wait. The official pages say no, and here is what they do say.

Does applying for proof of citizenship from the US take longer?

No, IRCC does not add time for applicants who live in the United States. IRCC says only files from outside Canada and the US may take longer, so the US is grouped with Canada. Your file waits in the same line as one sent from Toronto.

IRCC adds time in two cases only, according to its citizenship certificate page (modified June 1, 2026):

  • Add 3 to 4 months: you live outside Canada and the US, and you apply through a Canadian embassy or consulate.
  • Add 6 to 8 months: you apply for a child under 18 who lives outside Canada and the US, and you mail the file to IRCC in Sydney, Nova Scotia.

If you live in the US, neither rule applies to you.

Am I a Canadian citizen by descent?

Trace your family line one generation at a time. Each link is tested against the law in force when that person was born, so you see exactly where your chain holds and where it breaks. About three minutes, and no account needed.

Can a representative in Canada speed up proof of citizenship from the US?

No, IRCC does not say a representative gets you faster processing. Its paper guide (CIT 0001, modified September 23, 2026) only says to fill out the Use of a Representative form (IMM 5476) if you have one, paid or unpaid. The guide gives no shorter wait and no special line for these files.

A good representative helps you avoid mistakes. IRCC says it may send back a file that is not complete, and that delays processing. You then have to fix it and mail it again.

Be careful who you pay. Section 21.1 of the Citizenship Act (current to September 30, 2026) says only these people may charge you for citizenship help: lawyers and other members of a provincial law society, notaries in Quebec, and licensed consultants who are members of the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants. An unlicensed “agent” in Canada cannot charge you.

Can I apply for proof of citizenship from the US online?

Yes, many Americans can apply online, but not everyone. IRCC’s how to apply page (modified July 17, 2026) has no rule about where you live. The rules are about your family line, so check them before you pick paper or online.

You can usually apply online if you were born on or after February 15, 1977, outside Canada, to a parent who was born in Canada on or after February 15, 1977, or who became a citizen on or after April 17, 2009.

You must use paper if any of these fit you:

  • Your Canadian parent was also born outside Canada. The online guide says these applicants must send a paper application.
  • Your parent was born in Canada before February 15, 1977, or became a citizen on or before April 16, 2009. IRCC’s page also shows February 16, 1977 for this rule, so check with IRCC if your parent was born on February 15 or 16, 1977.
  • You do not know details about your parents or grandparents.
  • You are applying for 4 or more children.

If your claim runs through a grandparent, your Canadian parent was probably born outside Canada too. That means a paper file.

Where will IRCC send my certificate if I live in the US?

IRCC will mail your certificate to your home address in the United States. The online guide says IRCC does not mail paper certificates to addresses outside Canada and the US. People in other countries must pick a Canadian embassy instead, but a US address is fine.

That means you do not need a Canadian mailing address or a friend in Canada to receive the certificate.

What actually saves time on a US application?

A complete, correct first application saves the most time. You cannot buy a faster line, but you can avoid a file that gets sent back and costs you months of waiting. The steps below come from IRCC’s paper guide for citizenship certificates.

  • Use the right form: online only if your family line allows it, paper if not.
  • Send two IDs: both must show your name and date of birth, and one must have your photo. IRCC does not accept a birth certificate as ID.
  • Send two printed photos for a paper file, loose and not stapled.
  • Prove every link in your family line, from you back to the Canadian ancestor.
  • Pick the United States on IRCC’s country list for paper files, and use the address it shows.

The fee is $75 per person. IRCC does not refund it once work on your file starts. Our guide to citizenship by descent documents in 2026 lists what officers look for.

How long is the wait for proof of citizenship in October 2026?

The wait is about 34 months, based on IRCC processing time data updated October 9, 2026. That figure is the same whether you live in Ohio or Ontario. The same data shows about 130,700 people waiting for proof of citizenship. Your real wait depends on how complete your file is and how busy IRCC is.

We track how this number has moved in our post on proof of citizenship processing time in 2026. To see why the month you apply matters, read about the proof of citizenship wait by application month.

Frequently asked questions

Is proof of citizenship slower if I apply from the US?

No, it is not slower. IRCC says only files from outside Canada and the US may take longer. People living in the US face the same wait as people living in Canada, which was about 34 months in IRCC data updated October 9, 2026.

Does hiring a representative in Canada make IRCC process my file faster?

No, IRCC does not give faster processing to files sent by a representative. The CIT 0001 guide only asks you to fill out the Use of a Representative form (IMM 5476) if you use one. A licensed representative can help you avoid an incomplete file, which IRCC may send back, and that can save you months.

Can I get my citizenship certificate mailed to a US address?

Yes, IRCC mails paper certificates to addresses in Canada and the United States. It does not mail them to any other country, according to its online guide for citizenship certificates. People who live anywhere else must pick a Canadian embassy or consulate to receive the certificate.

How much does proof of citizenship cost?

Proof of citizenship costs $75 per person. IRCC lists this fee on its citizenship certificate page. IRCC does not refund the fee once it starts working on your file.
