A super visa extension in Canada is a visitor record, which you apply for online from inside Canada before your authorized stay ends. If you entered on a super visa on or after June 22, 2023, IRCC says you can stay 5 years at a time. Apply before your authorized stay ends, and you keep your status while IRCC decides.
This guide is for parents and grandparents on a super visa, and the children who host them. It is based on Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s (IRCC) super visa length of stay page , last modified July 6, 2026, and sections 182 and 183 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations, checked on October 11, 2026.
How long can you stay in Canada on a super visa?
It depends on when you applied and when you entered. If you applied on or after June 22, 2023, IRCC says you can stay 5 years at a time. The same is true if you applied earlier but entered on or after that date, even if the border officer did not stamp your passport. The visa itself allows multiple entries for up to 10 years.
Older files work differently. If you applied and entered before June 22, 2023, you can only stay as long as the border officer allowed. Check the date in your passport or on any document you got at entry.
Your stay date and your visa expiry date are two different things. The stay date is the one that controls when you must leave or apply.
When do you need a super visa extension in Canada?
You need one when you want to stay past the date your current stay ends. Most parents who entered after June 2023 never reach this point, because 5 years is a long visit. The common cases are older entries with shorter stamps, and parents whose 5 years are nearly up.
IRCC’s rule is simple. Before your status expires, you must either leave Canada or apply to extend your stay. Missing the date leaves only restoration, which we cover below.
How do you apply for a super visa extension in Canada?
You apply online for a visitor record, which IRCC describes as a document that lets you stay longer as a visitor and carries a new expiry date. A visitor record is not a visa, so it does not grant re-entry to Canada on its own. Your super visa still serves that purpose while it remains valid.
For parents who applied and entered before June 22, 2023, IRCC says an extension can be approved for up to 2 years. Check the IRCC fee list for the current visitor record fee before you pay.
Keep your medical insurance in force for the whole stay. An officer can ask whether you still meet the conditions of your visit.
What happens if IRCC does not decide before your stay ends?
You keep your status, because section 183(5) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations says that if you applied to extend and no decision is made by the end of your stay, your stay continues until IRCC decides. This is called maintained status. It only works if you applied before the old date passed.
If you leave Canada while you wait, you come back on your super visa instead. The border officer then decides your new stay.
What if your stay has already expired?
You may still fix it, because section 182 of the regulations lets an officer restore visitor status if you apply within 90 days after losing it and still meet the requirements of your stay. Restoration is not automatic, so treat it as a backup, not a plan.
After 90 days, restoration is gone. At that point the only safe step is to get advice about leaving Canada and returning properly.
Should you extend or leave and come back?
For many families, leaving and re-entering is simpler, if the super visa is still valid and travel is easy for the parent. IRCC’s own page lists leaving before your stay ends and re-entering as an option for older entries. An extension makes sense when travel is hard because of health, cost or a family need.
Think about the parent’s age and health before choosing. A long flight for a border reset is not worth a medical risk.
Many parents use the super visa while the sponsorship program is paused. On July 15, 2026, IRCC paused new Parents and Grandparents Program applications until further notice. It still plans to approve up to 15,000 people through the program in 2026.
Our guide on applying for a super visa while a PGP file is pending covers that overlap, and our PGP pause alternatives guide lists the other routes. If the host’s income changed since the visa was issued, read our super visa income requirements guide.
Our super visa service handles first applications and extensions, and our family sponsorship services cover permanent routes. You can confirm current forms and fees on the IRCC website.
Frequently asked questions
Can a super visa holder stay in Canada for 10 years?
Not in one visit by default. The super visa can be valid for up to 10 years and allows many entries, but IRCC says each stay is up to 5 years at a time. To stay longer in one visit, you must apply to extend before your current stay ends, and IRCC must approve it.
Can my parent apply for the extension on paper?
IRCC asks most people to apply for a visitor record online, and paper is only for limited cases set out in its instructions. If your parent is not comfortable online, the host child can help prepare the application. The answers must still be true and belong to the parent, because the parent is the applicant.
Does a visitor record let my parent travel to the US and come back?
A visitor record is not a visa, so it does not give re-entry on its own. Your parent would come back in on their super visa, if it is still valid. Short trips to the United States have their own rules, so check before booking if the super visa is close to expiry.
