Your proof of citizenship wait by application month is not one number. IRCC’s processing times tool gives each person an estimate based on the date IRCC got their file. Files sent early in 2026 usually have far less time left than the headline. That headline was 34 months on October 14, for a file sent that day, with about 130,700 people waiting.

Most coverage quotes the 34 month headline, but that only applies if you apply today. If you already filed, your month matters far more. This guide shows how the queue grew in 2026 and how to read your own estimate in IRCC’s tool.

We wrote this mainly for readers in the United States who are claiming Canadian citizenship through a parent or grandparent. If that is you, start with our Canadian citizenship by descent guide to confirm you qualify before you file.

What is the proof of citizenship wait by application month?

Your wait by application month is IRCC’s estimate of the time left for a file it got in a given month. Files sent earlier are further ahead in line, so they have less time left. In October 2026, the estimate for a brand new file is 34 months.

IRCC publishes these figures in its check processing times tool. You choose “Citizenship certificate (proof of citizenship)” and enter the date you applied. The tool then shows your place in the queue and the time left. The table below shows how the estimate for new files grew in 2026.

Historical data aggregated from the official Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) Check Processing Times tool (December 2025 – October 2026). Note: Each estimate applies exclusively to a new file submitted on that specific date; it does not reflect the remaining wait time for applications already in the queue.

Why does the wait change so much from one month to the next?

Your time left depends on how many files arrived before yours. The queue grew from about 56,300 people in April 2026 to about 136,000 in September 2026. October saw a moderate decrease, reducing the inventory to 130,700 files. So a file sent late in 2026 sits behind far more people than a file sent early in the year.

While IRCC does not explicitly publish a single reason for the backlog growth, immigration policy analysts and media reports point to two primary factors. Notably, Bill C-3 took effect on December 15, 2025 and let more people born abroad claim citizenship. Additionally, an IRCC review initiated in June 2026—which scrutinized certain Bill C-3 applications for reliance on unofficial genealogical records rather than government-issued documents—temporarily slowed the finalization rate of certificates.

Is the proof of citizenship queue still growing?

Yes. The line grew by about 22,300 people between the July and August 2026 readings. It then grew by about 14,200 between August 10 and September 3, 2026. The total stood at about 130,700 people waiting in October 2026, down by about 5,300 from September’s 136,000.

Growth was slower in September than in August, but the 34 month estimate for new files had not dropped as of the October update. Check IRCC’s tool for any newer reading before you plan around these numbers.

How should you read your own proof of citizenship wait by application month?

Find the month IRCC received your application, not the month you mailed it or signed the forms. Then read across to the time left. That number is an estimate based on the files ahead of yours, so it can move up or down when IRCC updates its data each month.

Our proof of Canadian citizenship processing time guide tracks the headline number over time. Use this page for your own month, and that page for the overall trend.

What should Americans who have not applied yet do now?

If you have not applied, you join the back of a line of about 130,700 people with a 34 month estimate, as of October 2026. You cannot jump that line. What you can control is a complete file on day one, because a missing record sends you back for more paperwork and adds time.

For most Americans, that means securing a long-form birth certificate (one that explicitly lists the parents’ names) for yourself and for each parent or grandparent in your Canadian lineage. These must be obtained directly from the respective state government vital records office, as IRCC strictly requires official source documents over third-party genealogical summaries. Our citizenship by descent document guide lists what IRCC expects for each generation.

Can you get a faster decision if you need a Canadian passport soon?

Sometimes. IRCC can process a citizenship certificate faster in some urgent cases. Examples are proof of citizenship for a job, or travel because of a death or serious illness in the family. You must ask for it and show proof of the urgent need. A wish to travel or move sooner is not usually enough on its own.

Read our citizenship certificate urgent processing guide before you ask. A weak urgent request does not help your file, and it can use up time you could spend fixing gaps in your documents.

Proof of citizenship wait: frequently asked questions

Does the 34 month wait apply to everyone?

No. IRCC posted the 34 month figure in October 2026, as the estimate for a file sent that day. Files IRCC got earlier have fewer people ahead of them, so they usually have less time left. The tool shows your own estimate when you enter your application date.

Where can I check my own wait?

You can verify your specific estimate using the official IRCC Check Processing Times tool. Select “Citizenship certificate (proof of citizenship)” from the dropdown menu and enter your exact application date.

Will my wait get shorter if the queue slows down?

It can. Your estimate depends on the number of files ahead of you and on how fast IRCC finishes them. Fewer new files does not change your place in line, but faster processing would. Check again after each monthly update, since the estimate is not a promise.

Need help with your citizenship by descent claim?

A long wait is easier to live with when you know your file is right. We review your family line, check each record against what IRCC asks for, and tell you plainly where the gaps are. That way the months you wait are not wasted on a file that comes back.
