Engineers can use the EB-2 NIW when they qualify for EB-2 and show an endeavor with substantial merit and national importance. A bachelor’s degree plus five years of post-baccalaureate experience can serve as the equivalent of an advanced degree, and USCIS decides case by case whether the experience is in the specialty (USCIS Policy Alert PA-2025-03).

The job title will not carry the case. The endeavor will.

How do engineers qualify for EB-2?

You need an advanced degree or its equivalent, or exceptional ability. For many engineers that means a master’s degree or a bachelor’s degree with five years of progressive experience. See the exceptional ability pathway if you do not meet the degree test.

What makes an engineering endeavor strong?

A strong endeavor is a specific project or program with a wider benefit than one employer. Examples are grid reliability tools, water infrastructure design or safer construction methods. State what you will build, for whom, and why it matters nationally.

  • Specific work: one clear project or line of work.
  • Wider reach: benefit for a region, an industry or the public.
  • Independent proof: government plans, funding programs and industry data.

What evidence shows you are well positioned?

Useful evidence includes patents, publications, project records, contracts and letters from experts with first-hand knowledge. A degree alone is not enough (USCIS Policy Manual). Read prong 2.

How do you build the case?

Step 1: Confirm your EB-2 base, your degree or your experience.

Step 2: Define your endeavor in one sentence. See how to write it.

Step 3: Gather project records, patents and papers.

Step 4: Collect strong letters.

Compare this route with the EB-1A in EB-1A vs EB-2 NIW. Read the plain guide to the NIW for the full overview.

Frequently asked questions

Can engineers apply for the EB-2 NIW?

Yes, if they qualify for EB-2 and meet the three NIW prongs with evidence (USCIS).

Do I need a master's degree?

Not always. A bachelor's degree plus five years of post-baccalaureate experience can serve as the equivalent, and USCIS decides case by case whether the experience is in the specialty (USCIS Policy Alert PA-2025-03).

What makes an engineering endeavor national in importance?

A specific project with a wider benefit than one employer, supported by independent evidence such as government plans and data.

Does an employer have to sponsor me?

No. The NIW lets you file for yourself and waives the job offer and labor certification (USCIS).

Are patents required?

No. Patents help as evidence, and so do publications, contracts and project records (USCIS Policy Manual).
