After your Canadian citizenship certificate arrives, you are a Canadian citizen on paper, but the certificate itself opens very few doors. It is not a passport, it does not give you health coverage, and it does not change your US tax filing. Each is a separate step, and most depend on where you live.
This guide is based on what Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) published on its proof of citizenship pages, last changed on 5 March 2026, plus Service Canada and Canada Revenue Agency guidance. It is written for Americans who claimed Canadian citizenship by descent through a parent or grandparent.
Am I a Canadian citizen by descent?
Trace your family line one generation at a time. Each link is tested against the law in force when that person was born, so you see exactly where your chain holds and where it breaks. About three minutes, and no account needed.
Check my family lineWhat does a citizenship certificate actually prove?
A citizenship certificate proves one thing: that you are a Canadian citizen. IRCC says both the paper and electronic versions are valid proof. That matters because many Americans with a Canadian parent became citizens by law when Bill C-3 took effect on 15 December 2025. The certificate does not make you Canadian. It confirms that you already are.
That is why we treat it as a key, not a destination. Every right you hold as a citizen still has to be used through another office: Passport Canada, Service Canada, a provincial health plan, the tax agencies. The certificate is the document each of them will ask to see first.
Can you travel to Canada with a citizenship certificate?
No. IRCC states plainly that proof of citizenship is not a passport or a travel document. You cannot board a plane with it. The only exception is for children aged 15 and under crossing between the US and Canada by land or sea, who may show a citizenship certificate. At 16, they need a passport.
The good news for Americans is that you do not have to rush. IRCC’s entry rules say American and Canadian dual citizens can travel with a valid Canadian or US passport. If you use your US passport, carry proof of your Canadian citizenship too. Most other dual citizens must use a Canadian passport, so this is a real advantage.
How do you get a Canadian passport after your citizenship certificate?
You apply for it separately, as an adult passport applicant born outside Canada. The certificate is your proof of citizenship for that application. IRCC asks for the original certificate if it was issued on or before 31 January 2012. A copy is accepted if it was issued on or after 1 February 2012.
You do not need a Canadian passport to live in the US. It does make travel simpler, and it gives you a second proof if your certificate is ever lost. Replacing a certificate means another long wait, as our guide to current proof of citizenship processing times shows.
Can you get a SIN after your citizenship certificate?
Yes, if you plan to work in Canada or receive government benefits there. A Social Insurance Number (SIN) is issued by Service Canada, not IRCC. Its list of required documents, updated 20 May 2026, names a certificate of Canadian citizenship as an accepted primary document for citizens. You still have to apply for the number yourself.
As a citizen, you do not need a work permit. You can take a job in Canada the day you arrive. What you do need is the SIN, because employers must have it to pay you. If you are staying in the US, you can leave this step until you have a real reason to take it.
Do you get provincial health coverage right away?
Not by being a citizen alone. Health care in Canada is run by each province, and every plan is based on where you live. Ontario is a clear example. Its OHIP rules say you must make Ontario your primary home and be in the province at least 153 days in any 12-month period.
Ontario dropped its waiting period, so an eligible new resident is covered right away. Other provinces set their own rules, and some still have waiting periods. A US citizen who holds a certificate but lives in Ohio or Florida is not covered by any provincial plan. Keep your US health insurance until you have actually moved.
Will you owe Canadian tax after your citizenship certificate?
Usually not just because you became a citizen. The Canada Revenue Agency bases tax on residence, and it looks at ties such as a home, a spouse and dependants in Canada. A citizen who keeps living in the US is generally not a Canadian tax resident. Moving to Canada is what changes that.
The US side is different. The IRS taxes its citizens on worldwide income wherever they live, as its Publication 54 explains. So if you move north, you will likely file in both countries. That is a question for a cross-border tax adviser, and it is worth asking before you move, not after.
Does your certificate make your children Canadian too?
Not automatically, and this surprises many families. Under the Bill C-3 rules in force since 15 December 2025, a child born abroad on or after that date to a parent who was also born abroad is a citizen only if that parent spent at least 1,095 days in Canada before the birth.
Children born before 15 December 2025 are in a different position, and many are citizens already. If you are planning a family, count your days in Canada now. Our guide to whether Bill C-3 could be reversed covers what is settled law and what is still being argued.
Frequently asked questions
Does a Canadian citizenship certificate expire?
IRCC lists Canadian citizenship certificates as valid proof of citizenship and does not give them an expiry date. Older paper certificates are still valid too. Your citizenship also has no residency rule. Unlike a permanent resident, you can live in the US for the rest of your life and stay Canadian, with no need to visit.
Can I use my Canadian citizenship certificate as photo ID?
It is not designed as everyday ID. It proves citizenship to government offices, such as Passport Canada and Service Canada. For travel and day-to-day identity, you will use a passport or a driver’s licence. Keep the certificate somewhere safe, because replacing it means a new application and another long wait in the queue.
Should I apply for a Canadian citizenship certificate if I am not sure I qualify?
Yes, that is exactly what it is for. IRCC says people who think they became citizens under Bill C-3 must apply for a certificate to find out for sure. It is easy to rule yourself out too early. Our list of six wrong reasons people rule themselves out is a good place to start.
