What is the Alberta Farm Stream?
The Alberta Farm Stream is an Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) pathway for experienced farmers who buy or start a primary production farm in Alberta. You must invest at least CAD $500,000 of equity and show a net worth of $500,000 or access to similar funds. You mail a paper application with a business plan, and Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation reviews the plan.
What happens if your plan is weak?
Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation checks whether your plan is feasible and viable and meets the needs of Alberta agriculture. A weak or incomplete application can be declined, and the $3,500 fee is non-refundable. We write the plan with you before you mail anything.
Why farmers choose this stream
- No competition pool: there is no points grid or EOI, so you apply when you are ready
- Flexible proof of skills: farm financials, training and work history, a business plan or a lender’s willingness to finance you
- Expert plan review: Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation judges the farm, not a score
- A direct result: approval makes you a provincial nominee, and you then apply to IRCC for PR
Is the Farm Stream right for you?
An honest check before you pay the $3,500 fee.
A good fit if you have
- Farm management skills you can prove with documents
- $500,000 of equity to invest in a primary production farm in Alberta
- A net worth of $500,000, or access to a similar amount of funds

Another stream may fit better. Compare all four Alberta entrepreneur streams.
Farm Stream requirements
You must meet every requirement when you mail your application and when Alberta assesses it. After nomination you apply for permanent residence with IRCC.
Farm management skills
Prove you can run a farm. Acceptable proof includes financials of a farm you own, education and work history in agriculture, your business plan or a lender willing to finance you.
Equity to invest
At least CAD $500,000 of your own equity in a primary production farming business in Alberta. AAIP may ask you to show you can invest more than the minimum.
Net worth
Documents showing a net worth of CAD $500,000, or confirmation that you can access a similar amount of funds from other sources.
Business plan
A business plan that documents your investment plans. Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation reviews it, and applications with the best growth for Alberta’s agri-food targets get priority.
Who cannot apply
International students, live-in caregivers, temporary foreign workers outside Alberta and people without valid temporary resident status cannot apply, nor can anyone under a removal order.
Not sure you qualify?
Tell us your farm background, your capital and your plan. We check it against the rules before you mail anything.
How the Farm Stream differs from the other three
No points grid
The other three streams rank candidates on a score. The Farm Stream does not. Alberta assesses your application on its own merits.
No EOI and no waiting
There is no Expression of Interest pool, so you apply when your package is ready. Alberta can still decline to process an application.
Paper application
Send the original package by registered mail or courier to AAIP in Edmonton. Email and fax are not accepted.
Agriculture review
Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation reviews your business plan for feasibility and viability, and gives its feedback to AAIP.
Direct nomination
If AAIP approves you, you become a provincial nominee and receive a nomination package by email, with steps to apply to IRCC.
Bigger capital bar
The Farm Stream asks for $500,000 of equity, more than the Rural stream’s $100,000 minimum, and it must go into primary production farming.

Your nomination is valid for 6 months. Apply to IRCC for permanent residence before it expires.
Medical and checks
You and your family must pass medical, criminal and security checks. Wait until IRCC asks before you book a medical exam.
Keep everyone updated

Extension
One nomination extension is possible for $150. Alberta must receive the request within 6 months of expiry, and approval is not guaranteed.
